The word 'Helicopter' comes from the French hélicoptère, which again originates from the Greek words helix or helik which means 'turning'and 'pteron' which stands for 'wing'. So a helicopter actually is turning wing. And that's not so far away from it's real description. They are classified and known as rotary wings - aricrafts which are propelled and lifted by horizontal rotors. The rotor with it's rotor blades provides lift without the aircraft needing a runway to start and land!
