The origins of Zorbing is said to be inspired of the Hamster Balls, that have been made as hard plastic single layer spheres made for small rodent pets. These have been manufactured and sold since at least the 1970's. In a Russian article on Zorbing, there is mention that a similar device debuted in 1973. In the early 1980's, a giant sphere was constructed by the Dangerous Sports Club, reportedly 23 metres across, with a gimbal arrangement supporting two deck chairs inside. Later, this device was eventually cut up for scrap. The big impact was later in the TV-series Gladiators, where they used human spheres, made of steel.
