Surfing finds its origin in the ancient Polynesian culture and used to be a central part of life. The chief of this culture was characterized to be the most skilled wave rider and so he also had the best board made from the best tree.
People could gain reputation by riding the waves on their boards. Europeans observed the art of surfing first in 1767 by the crew of the “Dolphin” at Tahiti.
