White Water River Rafting Group Session in Wales:

The Experience

Your day starts at the rafting centre where you and your group meet the instructors. You’ll get changed into your kit, which includes a wetsuit, helmet and buoyancy aid, so everyone is ready for the river.

Once the team is kitted up, your guide leads a safety briefing to explain basic paddle commands and what to do if someone falls into the water. After the briefing, you’ll head down to the launching point and climb into the raft together.

You’ll launch into the river to begin the first of your three runs. As you hit the first stretch of rapids, the force of the water pushes the boat around, so everyone needs to dig in with their paddles to keep moving in the right direction. Your guide calls out directions from the back, guiding the crew through drops, eddies and heavy waves while water spills over the sides.

Because you get three full descents down the river, the group gets time to improve its paddling rhythm after each run. As you head back up to go again, you’ll know what to expect on the next pass, allowing the team to tackle the faster sections with more speed and confidence. Each run presents a chance to try different lines through the rapids, meaning you’ll feel the full force of the river from start to finish.

Once the third descent is complete, you’ll paddle into the calm water at the end of the course to bring the raft ashore and head back to the main centre to change out of your wet gear.

White Water River Rafting Group Session in Wales: Fascinating Facts

White water rafting started accidentally in the mid 1800s. It's said that Major John Wesley Powell, whilst exploring a river system, ran into the wild rapids of the Colorado River running through Glen Canyon in Utah and the Grand Canyon in Arizona. In spite of the expedition's fragile wooden boats and lack of safety equipment Powell made it through the 'white water' - a fitting testimony to the courage of the pioneers of the American West. And the first recorded incidence of this great sport. However the big surge in river running began 100 years later. In the 1950s World War II rubber pontoon bridges were used as the bases for massive rafts. Gradually these crafts evolved into rubber rafts of all sizes useful for running all types of rivers. The 1970s saw the sport grow dramatically, first in the USA and then wherever in the world there was an exciting stretch of river to run. Today, rigid safety standards among the operators ensure that this extremely exciting sport can be enjoyed in confidence.
